Melanes

Melanes is near a very fertile and intensively cultivated valley of olive groves and orchards interspersed with cypress trees. On the opposite side of the valley is the small village of Kourounichori. Melanes has several traditional tavernas.

It is a beautiful area for walking. There are footpaths through the valley which lead to Kourounochori and via the hamlet of Mili to a marble statue, the Kouros of Flerio.

The marble statue dates from the 6th century B.C. and work on it was probably abandoned because one of the legs broke. The Kouros probably represents a young god such as Apollo, or a hero.

The statue lies in a well watered private garden which belongs to the Kondylis family.

Cold drinks and coffee can be enjoyed in a shaded seating area of the garden which also has a beautiful ancient olive tree.
