Agia

At a strategic point along the coastal road to the North of the island is the fortified Venetian mansion of Agia. It has wide ranging views across the Aegean and probably part of its function was the observation of ship movements during the Venetian occupation of the island.

Just before the pirgos is a small footpath to the right. It passes a private house and leads down ancient stone steps to the monastery and the small church of Agia.

The area near the monastery is abundant with fresh running water and shaded by ancient trees. Next to the small church is a permanent spring.
It is a very cool and peaceful area.

The monastery is no longer inhabited.
It used to be an area of pilgrimage on the 15th of August.
